A notification light for phones that no longer have one

Glint is a notification light app for Android. Older phones had a small LED that blinked when something was waiting. Most phones today have no LED, so you pick the phone up just to find out it was nothing. Glint brings that glance back as a flat coloured line on the screen edge, one for each app or person you care about. It stays on until you have seen the message, over any app, on the lock screen and with the screen off.

Light per app

Every app gets its own light

Pick an app, then choose where its light sits, what colour it is and how it moves. You can see exactly how it will look before you save it.

  • Five places: left, right, top, bottom or a ring around the camera.
  • Eleven colours and any custom colour you like.
  • Real app icons in the list, so you always know which is which.
  • +

Six styles: Steady, Ripple, Heartbeat, Sweep, Blink and Fade.

People and words

A light for one person, or one word

Mom can glow orange while the rest of WhatsApp glows green. A word like "invoice" can light up the top edge in any app. Each one can remind you every few minutes until you have read it.

  • Own colour, edge and style for each person or word.
  • Remind me: the light blinks every 10 minutes until it is read.
  • Hide the text so the peek panel shows only who wrote.
Swipe to peek

Read and reply without leaving your app

Pull a light inward and a small panel opens over whatever you are doing: a game, a video, a document. Read the message, reply right there, or open the app. Swipe a message away to clear it.

  • Works over any app, game or video.
  • Reply from the panel when the app allows it.
  • Tap to peek is off by default, so typing never opens it by accident.

And the rest of the phone

Lights are not only for messages. A few that people ask for most.

Charging light

The bottom edge fills as the battery charges, and shows about when it will be full.

Low battery

A red light blinks when the battery drops below 15%.

Missed calls

A blue light stays on until you have checked.

Lock screen

A black screen with the clock and a list of who is waiting. Swipe a light to peek.

Hide text when locked

Shows who, never what, until you unlock.

Light around the camera

The newest message rings the camera hole.

Quiet while watching

Holds the lights while you watch YouTube or Netflix, and brings them back after.

Pause for an hour

One tap on the home screen or a Quick Settings tile pauses every light.

Turn off after a while

A light can switch itself off after an hour while the message stays in the peek panel.

What Glint reads, and what it keeps

Glint reads notifications only from the apps you add. It uses them on your phone to draw the light and fill the peek panel. It does not save notification text and does not send it anywhere.

Like most apps, Glint uses Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to see which features are used and to fix crashes. They receive usage events, crash logs, your device model and Android version, and a random app instance ID. They never receive notification content, senders or keywords. You can turn this off in Settings, under Help improve Glint.

Glint Pro is paid through Google Play. There are no ads and no account. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

What is Glint?

Glint is an Android app that gives your phone a notification light. For each app you choose, a small coloured light appears on the edge of the screen when a notification is waiting. You swipe the light inward to read the message and reply without leaving what you are doing.

How do I get a notification light on an Android phone without an LED?

Install a notification light app such as Glint, allow notification access and "Display over other apps", then add the apps you care about and pick a colour for each. The light is drawn on the screen edge, so it works on phones that have no LED. Step-by-step guide.

Can I set a different colour for one person or one word?

Yes. Add a person or a word and give it its own colour, edge and style. A message from Mom can glow orange on the left while the rest of WhatsApp glows green on the right. Free covers one person or word, Pro covers more. How to set it up.

Does Glint read my messages?

Glint reads notifications only from the apps you add, and only to draw the light and show the peek panel. It does not save the text of a notification and does not send it anywhere. You can also hide the message text so the peek panel shows only who wrote.

What permissions does Glint need and why?

Notification access, so it knows when a notification arrives from an app you chose. Display over other apps, so it can draw the light on top of the screen without blocking your taps. Battery settings are optional and only keep the lights on time on some phones such as Samsung. Usage access is optional and used only for Quiet while watching.

Which phones does Glint work on?

Glint is for phones running Android 8.0 or newer. It is designed and tested on Pixel and Samsung phones and works with the cut-outs, notches and curved edges on today's screens.

Does Glint work with any app?

Yes, any app that posts notifications can get a light, including WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack, Messages and Instagram. You choose which apps get one, so nothing lights up that you did not ask for.

Will the light drain my battery?

Glint draws a light only while a notification from one of your apps is waiting. When nothing is waiting there is nothing on screen. You can also pause every light for an hour from the home screen or turn a light off automatically after an hour.

Does it work on the lock screen or when the screen is off?

On the lock screen the lights stay visible and a swipe peeks at the message. With Pro, Glint can also wake the screen dimly for 15 seconds when something arrives, stays dark in a pocket, and can hide message text while the phone is locked.

How is Glint different from the edge lighting built into some phones?

Edge lighting on some phones is a short animation when a notification arrives. Glint keeps a light on the edge for as long as the notification is waiting, gives each app and each person its own colour and style, and works on any phone running Android 8.0 or newer.

How much does Glint cost?

Glint is free to start with 3 apps, 2 light styles and 1 person or word. Glint Pro is ₹99, paid once, with no subscription. Every new install gets a 7-day Pro trial. There are no ads and no account.

When will Glint be on Google Play?

Soon. Glint is not on Google Play yet. This page will show the Google Play button on the day it goes live.
